Internalizing Professionalism

Professionalism and the resulting behaviors are the hallmarks of the nursing profession. associated values are hallmarks of a discipline. However, for students to intimately connect with professional core values requires educators' intentionality and role socialization. Through the development and implementation of a one-page "user manual," educators can effectively convey to students their professional values. Like the "owner's manual" that accompanies almost every technology or device, the educator's "user manual" details how the educator will engage students and establishes guidelines for how they should interact with the educator. The "user manual" must reflect the educator's morals and the discipline’s core values for efficacy. Educators seeking to incorporate a "user manual" may consider including sections such as personal strengths/weaknesses, features, manufacturer defects, how to avoid personal injury, and care and maintenance. The intentional integration of values integral to professional practice, through the use of a “user manual” models expectations and invites students to follow.
